Why is such a survey needed?

Some comments have been made to us, noting that there have already been several surveys regarding Agile tool usage. However, referring to the TargetProcess Inc. whitepaper (http://www.cs.odu.edu/~cs350m/Docs/agiletools.pdf), a large percentage of companies are still using traditional project management tools, such as MS Project, and spreadsheets (MS Excel) for their agile development. After having interviewed some companies, we discovered that the reason behind this is that many Agile tools (including VersionOne), offer a wide array of different customizable options and are thus harder to use and less intuitive than plain tools such as spreadsheets, pen and paper. Moreover, several companies and Agile masters (including Ron Jefferies http://www.agilejournal.com/content/view/308) believe that physical walls, whiteboards, and sticky notes are the best tools to use in Agile development, as long as the teams are collocated. Thus the reason behind this survey is not merely to gather statistics regarding which commercial tools are being used. We are trying to find out what is needed, and whether basic tools like spreadsheets, walls and paper are actually preferred in many cases. Thus the goal of this survey is more than just evaluating Agile project management tools and selecting the best tool.
